When I Open a Book

(For Part 2: Only Grade 5 singers need to read what is in the parentheses!)

Walk to the bookshelf and what do I see?
Hundreds of stories calling to me.
I open the cover, and what do I find?
A new way to open a door in my mind.

Oh, the places I go when I open a book.
I escape to a place all my own. (my own)
Oh, the sights I can see, (and the people I meet)
Come to life every time that (time that) I look in a book.

All of the pages have so much to say (Oooo ooo ooo ooo)
Seems that I learn something new everyday (Seems I learn everyday)
A book is a buddy, a magical friend. (Oooo ooo ooo ooo)
A gift I can open again and again.

Oh, the places I go when I open a book.
I escape to a place all my own. (my own)
Oh, the sights I can see, (and the people I meet)
Come to life every time that I look in a book.

Speaker 1: “Books can take me to Egypt!”
Speaker 2: “Books can fly me to France!”
Speaker 3: “Books can teach me to make things!”
Speaker 4: “And teach me how to dance!”

Speaker 5: “I can explore the deep sea and far outerspace!”
Speaker 6: “Books make the world a wonderful place!”

Oh, the places I go when I open a book.
I escape to a place all my own!
(I can learn and explore!) I can grow, I can soar!!!
When I o-o-o-pen, I o-o-o-pen a book. (When I open, when I open a book)
When I open a book.
When I open a book.

Homeward Bound (words and music by Marta Keen)

In the quiet misty morning
When the moon has gone to bed,
When the sparrows stop their singing
And the sky is clear and red.

When the summer's ceased its gleaming,
When the corn is past its prime.
When adventure's lost its meaning,
I'll be homeward bound in time.

Bind me not to the pasture,
Chain me not to the plow.
Set me free to find my calling
And I'll return to you somehow.

If you find it's me you're missing,
If you're hoping I'll return,
To your thoughts I'll soon be listening,
In the road I'll stop and turn.

Then the wind will set me racing
As my journey nears its end,
And the path I'll be retracing
When I'm homeward bound again.

Bind me not to the pasture,
Chain me not to the plow.
Set me free to find my calling
And I'll return to you somehow.

In the quiet misty morning
When the moon has gone to bed,
When the sparrows stop their singing,
I'll be homeward bound again.

I've Been Working On the Railroad

I've been working on the railroad
All the live long day.
I've been working on the railroad
Just to pass the time away.
Don't you hear the whistle blowin',
Rise up so early in the morn.
Can't you hear the captain shouting,
"Dinah, blow your horn!"

Dinah won't you blow,
Dinah won't you blow,
Dinah won't you blow your ho-o-o-orn?
Dinah won't you blow,
Dinah won't you blow,
Dinah won't you blow your horn?

Someone's in the kitchen with Dinah.
Someone's in the kitchen, I know oh-oh-oh.
Someone's in the kitchen with Dinah,
Strumming on the old banjo, and singing
Fee fi fiddle e i o
Fee fi fiddle e i o-o-o-o
Fee fi fiddle e i o
Strumming on the old banjo!

Crawdad Song

You get a line and I'll get a pole, Honey.

You get a line and I'll get a pole, Babe.

You get a line and I'll get a pole.

We'll go fishing in a crawdad hole,

Honey, Baby, mine.

Watcha gonna do when the lake runs dry, Honey?

Watcha gonna do when the lake runs dry, Babe?

Whatcha gonna do when the lake runs dry?

I'm gonna catch me a big horsefly,

Honey, Baby mine.

You get a line and I'll get a pole.

We'll go fishing in a crawdad hole,

I heard a duck say to a drake, Honey,

I heard a duck say to a drake,

"There ain't no crawdads in this lake."

I Had a Little Rooster (American Folk Song)

I had a little rooster by the barnyard gate,

And that little rooster was my playmate,

And that little rooster went cock-a-doodle-doo,

A-doodle-ee-doodle-ee-doodle-ee-doo.

I had a little dog by the barnyard gate,

And that little dog was my playmate,

And that little dog went woof-woof-woof,

And that little rooster went cock-a-doodle-doo,

A-doodle-ee-doodle-ee-doodle-ee-doo.

I had a little cat by the barnyard gate,

And that little cat was my playmate,

And that little cat went meow-meow-meow,

And that little dog went woof-woof-woof,

And that little rooster went cock-a-doodle-doo,

A-doodle-ee-doodle-ee-doodle-ee-doo.

Old Dan Tucker

Old Dan Tucker was a fine old man.

He washed his face in a frying pan.

He combed his hair with a wagon wheel.

Died with a toothache in his heel.

Get out the way, Old Dan Tucker.

You're too late to have your supper.

Supper is over and breakfast cookin'.

Old Dan Tucker stands there lookin'.

Now, Old Dan Tucker comes to town

Riding a billy goat, leading a hound.

Hound dog bark, and billy goat jump.

Landed Old Tucker on a stump.

Get out the way, Old Dan Tucker.

You're too late to have your supper.

Supper is over and breakfast cookin'.

Old Dan Tucker stands there lookin'.

Now, Old Dan Tucker come to town

Swingin' them ladies all around.

First to the right and then to the left,

Then to the one that he love best.

Get out the way, Old Dan Tucker.

You're too late to have your supper.

Supper is over and breakfast cookin'.

Old Dan Tucker stands there lookin'.

Thank you pillow in my quiet room,

Thank you Mother, thank you Dad,

Thank you heart for feeling glad.

You're a garden, you're a harbor, you're a holy place.

Golden sun going down;

Gentle blue giant, spin us around.

All through the night,

Safe 'til the morning light.

God Bless America (by Irving Berlin)

While the storm clouds gather far across the sea,

Let us swear allegiance to a land that's free,

Let us all be grateful for a land so fair,

As we raise our voices in a solemn prayer.

God bless America,

Land that I love,

Stand beside her, and guide her

Through the night with a light from above.

From the mountains, to the prairies,

To the oceans, white with foam,

God bless America, my home sweet home.

God bless America, my home sweet home.

I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas

I want a hippopotamus for Christmas!

Only a hippopotamus will do.

Don't want a doll;

No dinky tinker toy;

I want a hippopotamus to play with and enjoy!

I want a hippopotamus for Christmas!

I don't think Santa Claus will mind, do you?

He won't have to use

A dirty chimney flue.

Just bring him through the front door.

That's the easiest thing to do!

I can see me now on Christmas morning,

Creeping down the stairs.

Oh what joy and what surprise

When I open up my eyes

And see a hippo hero standing there!

I want a hippopotamus for Christmas!

Only a hippopotamus will do.

No crocodiles;

No rhinoceroses;

I only like hippopotamuses!

And hippopotamuses like me, too!

(instrumental break)

Mom says a hippo would eat me up, but then

Teacher says a hippo is a vegetarian!

(instrumental break)

There's lots of room for him in our two car garage

I'd feed him there, and wash him there, and give him his massage!

I can see me now on Christmas morning,

Creeping down the stairs!

Oh what joy and what surprise

When I open up my eyes

And see a hippo hero standing there!

I want a hippopotamus for Christmas!

Only a hippopotamus will do!

No crocodiles;

Or rhinoceroses-es;

I only like hippopotamuses-es!

And hippopotamuses like me, too!

Jingle Bells

Dashing through the snow

In a one-horse open sleigh;

O'er the fields we go

Laughing all the way!

Bells on bobtails ring,

Making spirits bright.

What fun it is to ride and sing a sleighing song tonight!

Oh! Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way!

Oh, what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh!

Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way!

Oh, what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh!

Snowflakes

Snowflakes falling all over town,

Slipping, sliding, everybody rushing 'round.

There's an icy chill in the air.

Telling us that winter's really here!

Oh! I'm so glad that winter is here!

Grab your sled and let out a happy cheer, because it's

Snowing, blowing, all through the day!

Winter winds will surely blow all your cares away!

Jingle Bell Rock

Jingle bell, jingle bell, jingle bell rock

Jingle bells swing and jingle bells ring

Snowing and blowing up bushels of fun

Now the jingle hop has begun

Jingle bell, jingle bell, jingle bell rock

Jingle bells chime in jingle bell time

Dancing and prancing in Jingle Bell Square

In the frosty air.

What a bright time, it's the right time

To rock the night away

Jingle bell time is a swell time

To go gliding in a one-horse sleigh

Giddy-up jingle horse, pick up your feet

Jingle around the clock

Mix and a-mingle in the jingling beat

That's the jingle bell rock!

Santa Claus is Coming to Town

You better watch out!

You better not cry!

Better not pout I'm telling you why:

Santa Claus is coming to town!

He's making a list,

And checking it twice!

Gonna find out who's naughty or nice.

Santa Claus is coming to town!

He sees you when you're sleeping.

He knows when you're awake.

He knows if you've been bad or good,

So be good for goodness sake!

O! You better watch out!

You better not cry!

Better not pout I'm telling you why:

Santa Claus is coming to town!

Rudoph the Red-Nosed Reindeer

You know Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen,

Comet and Cupid and Donner and Blitzen,

But do you recall

The most famous reindeer of all?

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer

Had a very shiny nose

And if you ever saw it

You would even say it glows.

All of the other reindeer

Used to laugh and call him names

They never let poor Rudolph

Join in any reindeer games.

Then one foggy Christmas Eve,

Santa came to say,

"Rudolph with your nose so bright,

Won't you guide my sleigh tonight?"

Then all the reindeer loved him,

As they all shouted out with glee,

"Rudolph the red-nose Reindeer

You'll go down in history!"

Light the Lights

Hang the decorations,

Hang the tiny trim,

Hang the shiny tinsel draping from a limb.

Place a precious bauble on a piney bough.

Candy canes and ribbons,

It is the season now!

Light the lights upon the Christmas tree;

Celebrate the season with friends and family.

Light the lights, and hang the star above;

Celebrate the season with the ones you love.

Hang a berry garland, hang a silver ball;

Hang a paper snowflake, delicate and small;

Each becomes a symbol, each becomes a part

Of a special memory I hold within my heart.

Light the lights upon the Christmas tree;

Celebrate the season with friends and family.

Light the lights, and hang the star above;

Celebrate the season with the ones you love.

Oh, Christmas tree, oh Christmas tree,

How lovely are your branches!

Light the lights upon the Christmas tree;

Celebrate the season with friends and family.

Light the lights, and hang the star above;

Celebrate the season with the ones you love.

With the ones you love.

The Cat Came Back

Old Mister Johnson had troubles of his own.

He had a yellow cat that wouldn't leave his home.

He tried and he tried to give the cat away.

He gave it to a man going far, far away, but

The cat came back the very next day!

The cat came back! We thought she was a gone-er,

But, the cat came back!

She just couldn't stay away! Away, away...

So, he gave it to a woman going up in a balloon.

He told her for to take it to the man up in the moon.

The balloon came down about ninety miles away,

And where the woman is now, well, I just can't say, but

The cat came back the very next day!

The cat came back! We thought she was a gone-er,

But, the cat came back!

She just couldn't stay away! Away, away...

So, he gave it to a man going way out west.

He told her for to take it to the one he loved the best,

But, the train hit the curve, then jumped the rail.

Not a soul was left behind to tell the awful tail, but

The cat came back the very next day!

The cat came back! We thought she was a gone-er,

But, the cat came back!

She just couldn't stay away! Away, away...

Meow! Meow! Meow!
